Located in the heart of downtown Janesville, the West and East Milwaukee Street projects included a total of 10 blocks of reconstruction. This historic section of urban roadway is part of the downtown’s ARISE revitalization plan. The project included utility upgrades to replace the early to mid-1900’s water main and an aesthetic update to better reflect the City’s revitalization plan.
Additional project improvements included the installation of new water main and storm sewer systems and the transition to a straight-through traffic movement with raised intersections for a more pedestrian-friendly downtown. The existing asphalt pavement section was replaced with an 8-inch concrete pavement, accentuated with colored concrete terraces, crosswalks, and concrete planter walls at each intersection. The project also included many other decorative features such as tree planting in the terraces, decorative lighting, and communal furniture. The concrete pavement in this section of downtown Janesville is now the centerpiece of a pedestrian-themed street, creating an inviting environment for storefronts and city-planned events for years to come.
