R.H. Batterman and Co., Inc. (Batterman) is adding to our Professional Surveying Team due to company growth and the implementation of our company strategic plan.  We are an established multi-discipline firm with a successful and long history as a leader in the Civil Engineering and Survey Profession.  For more than 100 years, our firm of over 40 employees has experienced little turnover, aside from planned retirements.  Due to increasing project workloads, and planned company growth, Batterman has an exciting opportunity for the right candidate.  We understand the best way to continue to provide excellent service to our clients is to hire talented, competent, motivated employees who are ready to continue the long Batterman tradition of being committed to our employees and community.

Position Description

As part of our growing survey team, you will provide expertise on a wide variety of surveying tasks, for both private and public clients, including preparing survey documents and working directly with staff and clients. This position offers tremendous growth opportunity and will require working knowledge of survey standards and procedures.  A successful candite will need to have a background in or a desire to learn about the following areas:

  • Experience in contract administration.
  • Proficient in project management.
  • Competent in land records research.
  • Familiarity with supervision or performing survey data collection.
  • AutoCAD proficiency is a must and knowledge of Civil 3D and Trimble Business Center would be a plus.
  • Experience in a wide variety of surveys including boundary, topographic, route, right-of-way, ALTA/NSPS Land Title, land division, subdivision, annexation, easement exhibits, and legal descriptions.
  • Familiarity in preparation of Right of Way and Transportation Project Plats and the Facility Development Manual.
  • Proficient with working with municipalities including understanding ordinances, applications and presentations at public meetings.
  • Knowledgeable with Trimble survey equipment.
  • Knowledgeable about LiDAR methods and usage.
  • Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word).

This position will require detailed collaboration to maintain project timelines, budgets, and client expectations. We are looking for someone who enjoys the client side of land surveying and who has experience or an interest in preparing proposals and project budgets.

Registered Land Surveyor in the State of Wisconsin or ability to become registered within 6 months of employment will be required, certification in the State of Illinois would be a plus.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage multiple projects, ensuring timely completion within scope, schedule, and budget
  • Foster and maintain relationships with the team and clients
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with clients, the team, and cross-departmentally
  • Build trust with management by completing tasks in a timely and budget-conscious manner
  • Delegate tasks effectively to the team
  • Support the engineering design team, ensuring availability of internal expertise and mentorship
  • Handle conflict resolution within project work
  • Responsible for completion of reports and technical documents
  • Participate in intake and development of RFPs and RFQs
  • Lead design team members in project review and perform project-related quality control
  • Willingness to learn key elements of civil engineering design relevant to our projects
  • Directly responsible for safe, efficient, and cost-effective designs for our clients

Work from any of our offices in Beloit, Janesville, or Elkhorn, Wisconsin, with HYBRID potential. Must obtain a Wisconsin PE license within one year of hire.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • 2+ years design project management
  • Design project engineering experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency with CAD/BIM software(s)
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering

Preferred

  • 3+ years of progressive experience in roadway design
  • Practical experience with Wisconsin DOT projects and municipal roadway design
  • Experience with project contracts, specifications, and PS&E (Plan, Specifications, and Estimates)
  • Ability to read, review, and perform QA/QC (Quality Assurance/Quality Control) on designs

Desired

  • Previous experience scoping projects
  • Ability to apply practical field experience to inform design decision-making
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Civil 3D software

Required

  • 2+ years’ design experience
  • ABET-accredited Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering
  • EIT certification or ability to obtain

Preferred

  • Experience in sectors like transportation, stormwater, municipal, and the private sector
  • Proficiency in Civil 3D software
  • Familiarity with Wisconsin DOT procedures
  • Knowledge in municipal workings

Desired

  • Familiarity with contractual plans and designs; related agency connections are a plus!

As a part of our growing civil engineering team, you will assist in the design and construction management of various transportation, land/site development, infrastructure, and facility improvement projects. Duties will include assisting in the development of reports, plans, details, and other engineering documents related to these projects using AutoCAD Civil 3D and other civil design software. This position offers tremendous growth opportunity.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited University with emphasis in Civil Engineering
  • E.I.T. certificate or the ability to obtain the certificate within one year of hire date.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with other team members and clients.
  • Demonstrate organizational, communication and computer skills.
  • Working knowledge of basic computer skills (e.g., Microsoft, AutoCAD, Excel etc.)
  • Previous internship or summer work within the Civil Engineering Field is preferred but not required.

A successful candidate will need to have background in or a desire to learn about the following areas:

  • Site Plan Design and Plan preparation.
  • Municipal Infrastructure
  • Private Development
  • Construction inspection with the proper documentation
  • AutoCAD proficiency is desired, but we will train the right candidate.

This position will require collaboration with our team to maintain project timelines, budgets, and client expectations.
