Yes, We Survey in the Winter!

We get asked this question at some point every winter, or it could just be assumed that land surveyors cannot perform fieldwork in the winter. Land surveying and even construction continue through the winter months, even in the snow and freezing temperatures. Also, the misconception that a survey will cost significantly more in the winter is inaccurate.

Part of the appeal of making land surveying a career is the ability to work outside in some of the most beautiful landscapes, and winter offers the best. The winter is a great time to survey in heavily wooded areas; the fallen leaves offer a farther line of sight, and GPS receivers have clearer access to the satellites. Surveys on swampy or inaccessible lands can be better traversed in the winter; in fact, we insist they be postponed until frozen ground conditions are present.

With construction staking slower in the winter, you may find shorter timelines for completion versus calling us in the summer months. If you know you need a land survey, consider doing it in the winter instead of postponing it to a busier time. We have our snowshoes on, trucks in four-wheel drive, and shovels ready to go!
